Science writers and journalists are often asked to moderate panels, and other public conversations, but there is little training for those opportunities. It’s why Lesley Evans Ogden and I are heading to Pretoria, South Africa to give a workshop on Moderating for Impact at the World Conference of Science Journalists. Get ready to share hosting victories and horror stories, role play and think about whether you really need a panel at all.

I’m delighted to return as host and science advisor for this year’s Jasper Dark Sky Festival, as it celebrates 15 orbits around the sun. It’s always an honour to help bring the cosmos a little closer—from stargazing to storytelling, and everything in between.

Great ideas lose their power when they are buried in jargon, lost in the weeds or are just…too long. This hands-on, two-hour workshop is designed for professionals who need to explain complex topics – data, strategy, research or processes – to people that don’t speak the lingo.

This summer, Dr. Bob Holmes and I are trading lecture halls for tide pools—we’re co-teaching an undergrad course in science communication at Bamfield Marine Station. Expect equal parts salt spray and metaphor.

I’m thrilled to join Rotating Planet as a co-writer on an upcoming documentary exploring the relationship between wildlife and fire. We’ll be filming, interviewing, and crafting the story over the next two summers, with the project set to wrap in Fall 2026. Stay tuned for updates from the field!
